Who Is the Telc A2 Exam Suitable For?

The Telc A2 exam is an internationally recognized test designed to assess German language proficiency. It is intended for individuals who have already acquired basic German skills and would like to officially certify them for personal, academic, or professional purposes. The Telc A2 exam evaluates whether participants are able to communicate in everyday situations in German and express their thoughts in writing.

This exam is suitable for:

  • individuals who need official proof of basic German language skills when applying for a visa or residence permit;
  • young professionals and students in German-speaking countries;
  • applicants who would like to officially document their language proficiency.

The Telc A2 exam is often chosen when proof of higher language levels such as B1 or B2 is not required.

To register for the exam, you need a valid passport or national ID card with a photo. The document must be submitted to the IISC Institute no later than 14 days before the exam date. Previous certificates, such as proof of German language skills at the A1 level, are not required.

Structure of the Exam

The Telc A2 exam consists of two parts:

  • Written Part

The written exam lasts 70 minutes and includes multiple-choice tasks in which participants must select the correct answer from several options.

The written section consists of the following parts:

  • Listening Comprehension – ability to understand spoken information;
  • Reading Comprehension – understanding advertisements, letters, and short texts;
  • Writing – composing a letter, message, or response (for example, replying to an invitation or advertisement);
  • Language Elements – choosing the correct words, articles, and prepositions in short texts.
  • Oral Part

The purpose of this part of the exam is to determine whether participants can engage in simple conversations in German. The oral exam lasts approximately 15–20 minutes.

Candidates first introduce themselves briefly and answer questions from the examiner. Afterwards, they take part in a conversation with another participant on a given topic, such as planning a meeting or a trip together.

In most cases, the oral exam takes place on the same day as the written exam. A short break is scheduled between the two parts.

Important note: The use of dictionaries and electronic devices during the exam is not permitted.

When Is the Exam Considered Passed?

Each part of the Telc A2 exam is assessed separately. The exam is considered passed if a total of at least 36 points is achieved, which corresponds to 60% of the maximum possible score.

If a participant scores less than 60% of the maximum possible points in either the written or oral section, the exam is considered failed and must be retaken.

There is no limit to the number of attempts — you may register for the exam as many times as necessary.

The exam papers are evaluated at the Telc headquarters. Processing usually takes 4–6 weeks. As soon as the results are available, you will receive a notification and your digital result by email.

Please note that Telc certificates and result sheets are provided exclusively in digital format.
