First, listen to a short text all the way through and try to grasp the general meaning. During the second listening, write down unfamiliar words and look up their meanings. Pause and rewind difficult sections if necessary. Afterwards, analyze the overall content of the dialogue or monologue and, if you wish, summarize it in your own words.
While listening, it is helpful to repeat the text out loud and imitate the pronunciation as closely as possible. Listening comprehension and pronunciation are closely connected. Scientific studies even show that people understand spoken language better when they are able to pronounce it correctly themselves.
Varied Content and Different Channels
For effective practice, combine different formats and channels: engage in conversations with native speakers (in person or online via voice calls), listen to music, podcasts, or literary works in German, and watch films and series in German. Interactive exercises in mobile apps or on learning platforms (such as Duolingo) also help improve listening skills. Switching between different media reinforces important phrases, exposes you to various dialects, and gives you access to a wide range of topics.
From Easy to Challenging
Especially at the beginning, short audio or video materials with subtitles are particularly helpful. Choose content that is challenging but still generally understandable. Over time, gradually increase the complexity of the materials. At the same time, note down and memorize new words and expressions. Through repeated practice and active use in conversation, you will expand your vocabulary, improve your listening comprehension, and strengthen your speaking skills.
Independent practice provides an excellent foundation: it helps you get used to the sound of the language, practice pronunciation, and continuously expand your vocabulary. It also offers maximum flexibility. However, learning in a group under the guidance of a teacher is significantly more effective.
